She had looked at Ruby like she was the only friend she’d ever had-no, like she was the only friend she’d ever need. Weiss had seemed almost…fragile, then, far from the confident, talented, Huntress she had come to know over the intervening weeks. Only that wasn’t Weiss all the time, was it? Ruby thought back to their first few days at Beacon, from their first ill-fated encounter with Blake to how Weiss had reacted to their becoming partners for the first time. Ruby found it oddly reassuring that Weiss, confident and poised as she was, seemed to suffer from them as well. It was, Ruby realized, exactly the sort of setting one would expect for a Beacon student’s nightmare-perhaps of the lost-on-exam-day variety. But with more time now to examine her surroundings, she realized now that even the worst Beacon hallways didn’t have ceilings as low as this one, nor the same stale air and aura of vague hopelessness. The hallway itself was gray and unremarkable, like one of Beacon’s more run-down, utilitarian buildings, which was why she hadn’t noticed at first that anything was amiss. And now, she stood in an empty hallway, her own words echoing back to her like whispers of mockery. Klein’s relatively warm reception had lulled her further into that false hope. She’d naively thought Weiss could fight through the Nightmare’s influence to help her and they’d fight it off together and everything would be alright. Or did you forget what Shion said? And she had forgotten, or hadn’t truly believed, deep down, that Weiss could be her enemy, until now. Well, of course it isn’t funny, said the cold, rational side of her brain. Hadn’t Shion said she would be stuck in the dream forever if she lost all the coins? Or was that only if she spent them? At least she had the dream key, but without Shion’s guidance, she had no idea how she would go about using it. She took in one deep, calming, breath, then another. Her heart thundered in her ears, so loud she could barely think. Ruby balled up her fists, trying not to panic. The door was gone, replaced by empty hallway like it had never been there at all.
